Our client is looking at entering into a corporate contract hire contract. The vehicle is a Landrover Discovery 3.0 SDV6 HSE 5DR Auto Registration 2014/15. Is this vehicle classed as a car or a van?.

There's quite a few considerations to make when the car/van question comes up but the one you mention looks on the face of it to be a car and i think it'd be a struggle to suggest otherwise.
Explain
From the specs I can find, this vehicle is about 2.5 tonnes unladen, so I don't see the exemption you cite being relevant. From images this also looks like a car, albeit a bulky one. Please explain how you have come to the conclusion this derives as a van. Okay , we called HMRC for guidance and we were told to review VAT notice 700/64 and looking at the exemptions "vehicles of not less than 3 tonnes unladen weight".Also if you review HMRC car derived vans combi vans the above vehicle is derived as a van. Please help if you can.
I'd be astonished
if the "HSE" tag was used for a commercial vehicle! That's the top of the range
Is the vehicle of a construction primarily suited for the conveyance of goods or burden of any description? I would say a 5 door, windowed £60k vehicle is not.
I thought the distinction was a functional one. Cars are vehicles that are primarily designed for the carriage of persons. Vans are vehicles that are primarily designed for the carriage of goods. A key marker is having windows around the rear compartment. Persons like having windows to look out of. Goods couldn't care less.
When it comes to the LR Disco John is spot on..
The original design Mk1 Discovery came in a variant with Front doors only (and a tailgate!!) and where the windows would have been was just metal plate - this was a factory model not an adapted car.
I seem to remember some discussion one time about a car version where the owner had removed the seats but even this was still classed as a car as that was how it had been constructed.
Actual use and design are two different things so whilst it would be amusing to see a new top spec Disco full of sheep and building materials it would still be a car.
Proper vans with extra seats and windows, on the other hand, tend not to become cars although the conversion used attract purchase tax and vans used to have a lower speed limit (even car derived ones)

Is that a band?
I'm not sure what sort of music they'd make though. ...Disco full of sheep...
Claiming that name...........

That is a brilliant band name!!
If you gents dont mind, I will be suggesting a namechange (whilst I'd be happy to compensate you both for coming up with the name - we aren't very good, generating any income at all will be a challenge).
