Hi All,
I currently work as an apps specialist/software engineer - I have been in IT for 10 years. I'm looking for a new career, one with lots of opportunities and scope.
Where's the best place to start in the world of accountancy?
- Do I study for the AAT qualifications then start from the bottom at an accountancy firm?
- What are my chances as a mature student (37) for firms to employ me?
- Would my experience in software help working with apps such as Sage/SAP FICO etc
Thanks in advance.

Subject is covered relatively regularly if you search the site. I always assume specialist IT people are very well paid and, if so, your earnings could dip significantly for some time.
Your IT skills would, I am sure, be advantageous - but if you are trying to move away from IT ....
Certainly the way the world is changing I would have thought that a career in software engineering/development would be far more secure, long term, than one in accountancy. Then again I do not really understand software development except it is what my son does to earn a living.
Frankly I am quite glad I am fast approaching the end of a career in finance because technology advances and ways of working certainly appear to me to be rapidly changing, I suspect longer term there will be a reduction in employment levels within the UK finance industry and a corresponding drop in average financial rewards for finance professionals (Except , of course, for a select few who will prosper)
However not really the question you asked but more my general musings on the decline of the traditional professional classes.
Agree

Agree entirely.
