Closing PAYE schemes

Closing PAYE schemes

Didn't find your answer?

I have always written to HMRC to have schemes closed. I am just wondering whether this is still necessary as I am putting the closure date on Moneysoft which then gets reported via RTI?  What do you think?  Is that now enough for HMRC?

That should be enough

and HMRC's website confirms it. Whether it works in practice will have to wait and see.

I hope so!

It is what I did for a client back in October 2013 - an EPS saying it was the final submission for the year and that the cessation date was 31 Oct 13.  I haven't had any RTI late filing notices since then, but that may just be due to the 'final submission' tick box, rather than notifcation of the cessation.

What a handy thread

I had no idea you could end a scheme via Moneysoft itself - it was worth logging into AWeb today just for this!!

With my MVL Online hat on I'm afraid to say the above does not appear to be working properly.  We do lots of liquidations, and as part of that, need to ensure HMRC are happy they have all returns for active periods.

Quite often a client/their accountant has submitted an RTI return marked as final a few months before liquidation formally starts.  HMRC still insist on receiving RTI submissions for the missing few months.  We've seen this enough times to be confident it's not just the accountant cocked up and didn't tick the right box.

I had the same question a few months ago and was told by the HMRC Employer "Helpline" to enter a cessation date into the software for the final EPS and this would flag it as a closed scheme on their side. I've had no reminders since then for any further RTI submissions.

Having read the replies above, I've just logged on the HMRC website and this employer is still showing on my PAYE client list - although I don't know if this has any significance. Do they normally disappear once the scheme is formally closed?

Following SoL's post I think I'll add in deleting them from my online list as well, and then leave it at that.  Maslins, HMRC have not sent us any reminders for late submissions for the months after the closure dates on Moneysoft so if anything does arise later, my view is that I have done my bit.
