converting garage to use as office

converting garage to use as office

Didn't find your answer?

Good morning.

With the soon to be added family member about to enter the world, my home office is being changed into a nursery.

So, rather than renting offices, I'm thinking of converting the garage into an office.

This will involve putting in flooring, lighting, radiators, false-wall / partitions / plastering, carpet and a "velux" window etc..

Could I put these expenses through the limited company and claim back the VAT? If I was renting a unit somewhere, then there would be no problem with putting these items through the company I assume, but when it is the garage at home?

I appreciate the issues re change of use and business rates etc.. so intend to keep some personal things in there too and a sofa and personal books etc.

Many thanks for your thoughts.

Not sure
Not my area of expertise but woukd have thought you can't have it both ways. If you reclaim 100% if the VAT (-assuming that's permissable which it may well be) can you then tell the Council, insurance company etc that it's part only business use?

@op
If instead of it being you a client had come to you with this issue what would your advice have been?
