Taxfiler

We've moved from Taxcalc to Taxfiler and couldn't be happier.  Very quick and simple to produce a tax return - just a few minutes start to finish rather than faffing around with entering database information - in fact just like how Taxcalc used to be!!!!

Another vote for Taxfiler

One of the best features is the ability to file all different types of tax return, and not have to pay for 2 or 3 lots of software, or buy so many of each type of return..

We changed last year and have not regretted it.

Accounts

Taxfiler - not tried it - presumably still needs iXBRL Accounts - what's the best "pairing"?

Tax filer takes an accounts feed ...

... from VT and Xero. No doubt they will add more feeds over time.

We use VT and think it's the best thing since sliced bread.

VT

We use VT and Taxfiler, but wish VT was either in The Cloud like Taxfiler or had a Mac add on for Excel.  VT is the only software we use in Windows.

Taxfiler

Another one changed from taxcalc after price rises, database issues and also because we wanted to be cloud based. It doesn't lead you by the hand quite as much as taxcalc but generally we're really pleased and the support / suggestions response is great too.

Absolute Accounts software works very well for me, both in accounts production and CT600 production.  They have a technical helpline forming part of the annual subscription, and their responses are quick.  You can also email them instead of phone, and they respond just as quick.

Absolute also

I've been using Absolute [based on Forbes] since it started, 5+yrs. You can either purchase the whole system or just the bits you need. I use Accounts and tax [SA, P/ship & CT] which link together along with the client database.

Excellent support desk.  As Carolynne says you can email them. Typical response time? Within the hour, often inside 30mins

Another vote for Absolute

We've been using Absolute since it started too. Accounts for companies, partnerships and sole traders, plus corporation tax returns, self assessment tax returns, partnership tax returns and p11ds.  Excellent support when required but have been using it from day one with no formal training required very happily.

TaxCalc

Changed from Digita to TaxCalc a year ago. Just renewed TaxCalc for another year along with their accounts production plus £50 off for being an ICPA member.

Keytime

I have used Keytime Corporation Tax and Self-Assessment software for over 10 years with no major problems.  If I have had to phone support for some reason they always respond politely and patiently.  I have never felt the need to look elsewhere.

I use Iris Open Tax for both Company & Personal Tax Returns. It's cloud based and an excellent package. I have used since its launch and now in my 3rd year.

taxcalc

Seems to be a lot of people moving from taxcalc to taxfiler.

Personally havent tried taxfiler so cant comment on in.

Used to use VT for accounts and taxcalc for tax returns but much prefer integrated solution of taxcalc accounts and tax.

Though possibly looking to move to a fully integrated solution over the next couple of years so think will be a choice between absolute, digita or IRIS, from what I have seen so far.

why the move?

I've just started out and have been looking at Taxcalc for accounts and tax.  I rushed in and purchased vtsoftware, but with hindsight the accounts/tax combined offering is probably better for me.

I'm curious why you might be looking to move away from that setup to another provider?  As a new sole practitioner I'd rather get my next choice of software right first time.

Any thoughts appreciated

cheers

Taxcalc is great for accounts and tax but not so great for Practice Management.  I actually prefer it to IRIS which previously used for about 15 years when worked as an employee in practice.

Ideally you are looking for a package that will have the following; time and fees module so you can do timesheets which can easily be run per client as WIP reports then billed, automail so you can easily do the same types of letters from the database, company secretarial so you can make sure everything is up to date from an accounts filing and annual return viewpoint, practice management reports so you know the stage of each job in work in progress, fixed asset register within software etc.

Currently I have been doing all the above on spreadsheets which works fine when just me.  But when you take on staff and additional clients and people forget to update things etc then a fully integrated accounts, tax and practice management package justifies the additional cost compared to the time it saves.  Currently have about 150 clients and one staff member.  But expect this to grow to 250 clients and 2-3 staff members in the next year.

IRIS always claims it saves you 20+ hours per month.  Going to a seminar they are running in Central Scotland in a couple of weeks time and will be interesting to see how they could save me that time.  They could probably save a few hours for me but not sure +3days.

Consider the cost

@Marks. Having moved from Digita to TaxCalc I think you will find moving from TaxCalc to Digita or Iris an expensive one. IMHO if you need all the bells and whistles then they will serve you well enough but many small practices probably don't need this level of functionality. More to the point I think you will be surprised at the increase in fees you have to pay so consider carefully before you sign up.

Icing on the cake

The fully integrated nature of Absolute is very enticing.

However Gbooks appears to have a more comprehensive Practice Manager including creating tasks and a contact log, the sort of thing one does in Outlook and/or Excel.

If Gbooks would add an 'email client' (ie the technical computer term) which integrated to the contact log that would the icing on the cake.

@marks

Thank you for your posting above.  We both appear to be realising the benefit/cost of Iris.

For many years I have been a one man band but the practice is growing as will the staff numbers.  Your point about staff forgetting to up date is one I am suffereing from.  However I also accept that staff are not driven as entrepreneurs so 80-85% accuratecy is about right so a system that reduces this is available at a price.

I have looked and tried many of the excellent offerings in the market but as they are not joined up.  In my view a practice management solution is the first that needs to be in placefollowed by a full document management solution.

If you use spreadsheets can you ask someone else to run them?  Try it - you will be shocked at the training time.

Gbooks for me too

I use gbooks for corporation tax. Once you've done the accounts the CT600 is pretty much completed for you, and XBRL accounts/tax comp are attached automatically. So all very easy.

Gbooks is great

As a small sole practitioner....having accounts and CT600 under the same roof makes my working life easier. You get online integration@ a much smaller cost than Digita or IRIS. All the XBRL tags..taken care of...very happy
