As above, just rename the file to a .xls instead. I occasionally have this and works everytime.
Try with LibreOffice. I've successfully opened Excel files with it that Excel refused to.
What is the point?
A quick Google reveals that identically titled and worded questions have been asked in a number of forums including Experts-Exchange back in 2010. And this is not the first time there have been questions like this in Any Answers. What do people intend to achieve by doing this?
Patience JKnight. The helpful sole that will provide us all with the link to the useful tool that solves the problem is yet to appear.
Update Version of Excel
This is valid extension for newer versions of Excel.
I use Microsoft Office 2011 (for Mac) and Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 with Window 8.1 for laptop and this extension can be read with both these packages.
Have you also ensured your software is fully up to date in case it could now be read?

Close Excel
I get this occasionally with Excel 2007 and close Excel and go to finder and open the file which re opens Excel, it's worked every time so far.
