You're in luck
My crystal ball informs me that there will be another new member along this very day with a helpful link to software that will cure your problem. My predictions have been very good just lately.
Or......
You could just try opening it with Libre Office which is completely free and very good at fixing this sort of thing.
The following steps might help recover your file:
1. Click the File menu
2. Click Open
3. Locate the file, but do not click the Open button. Instead, click the drop-down arrow next to the Open button.
4. Click "Open and Repair"
5. In the dialog that pops up, choose "Repair". If that does not work, try the "Extract Data".
6. Let us know if this works. If not, we will see what else we can come up with for you.
If you can edit the filename including the extension (which used to be possible on XP) then you can just delete the x at the end. No, really.
No guarantees that more than a simple spreadsheet will work correctly, but it used to work for payroll info sent from 1 particular client when I had an old pooter that didn't do xlsx files.
I second the LibreOffice idea. I use it to the exclusion of Excel simply because I have had so many Excel files sent to me that Excel refuses to open, and LO just shrugs and says "Nae problem".
