I’m once again considering having a go at the CTA exams and this is the first time I’ve looked at the syllabus since the merger with the institute of indirect taxation.
My current role is a senior finance position within industry and includes me dealing with all CT and VAT issues in house. I’m looking at using the CTA to gain a more in depth knowledge of these areas and hopefully add another good qualification along the way.
Having sat the VAT diploma (IIT) a few years ago I was wondering if the indirect tax route (VAT advisory papers) were a massive step up from this in terms of technical content ?
Anyone comments/thoughts much appreciated.

I thought the same
Hi,
I thought the same as you a few years ago, and embarked on CTA. Having an exclusive industry and CIMA background, in the end I found this just too far from my experience and knowledge.
I then completed ATT instead, (including a distinction on the VAT paper) and was very happy with that in the end, once I got used to the idea of not having two 'Chartered' quals to my name.
Recent switch to industry
Thanks tom123
I only made the move to industry 18 months ago after spending 15 years in practice dealing with the usual mix of audit, accts prep and tax along the way, so my general tax knowledge is pretty good.
Like you I already have the ATT qualification, which I did alongside my ACCA. I understand from friends and former colleagues that CTA is a distinct step up from the chartered accountancy qualifications, but I do have a solid knowledge base to work from.
Just a question of deciding which route to go down.
Curious

When did you sit your VAT exam?
