There is a page number (and indeed number of pages) function. So the basic page numbering is quite easy. But if you are asking how to start the page counter at 21, then I'm not sure.
In the 'Page' tab
of the page setup dropdown there is a 'First Page Number' box, auto by default, in which you can type an alternative.
Strangely,
if you use the 'Number of pages' feature it appears to say 'Page 21 of 1' for the first page!
Cannot use Page X of Y
You cannot use "Page X of Y" in conjunction with a different starting number. Logically, this is because Excel no longer knows how many total pages there are. Under Auto numbering starting from 1, it calculates the total number of pages.
"Page X" on its own will work though, which is presumably what the OP wants.
Lazy programming!
Not very hard to make the total number of pages = total + (start-1). It must know the total to do it starting from1.
Not necessarily
If you are starting at page 20, there must be 19 pages coming from somewhere else before that. There may be a load of pages coming from somewhere else afterwards as well. Excel has no way of knowing.
Not offering the option to put a total number of pages in to get around this is slightly lazy programming. Possibly they think it is too rare to offer as a standard feature.
If you know the total number of pages
then it is possible to enter the number of total pages manually.
Make as if you want to print the whole file using Ctrl P, or preview first.
Then on the print screen you have the opportunity to print the whole range or just selected pages.
I think if you enter in the box 21-28 or 19, 21, 25-28 (to choose only specific pages), then it should print just those pages but with the correct numbering.
