Do I need to keep subscribing to CIMA post qualification?

Do I need to keep subscribing to CIMA post...

Didn't find your answer?

i became an associate earlier this year in June. the job i got (which i started about a week before) came with a salary of someone who was fully qualified, and i duely became officially qualified a week later that June and got my 2 large certificates with that nice pink seal.

ive Zero interest in making a career out of this, as i plan to be in employment till summer 2016 only and have No plans to go back into finance or accountancy ever again.

my CIMA subs fee to pay for this year and next year is £400+. I can't be bothered.

In my situation do i have to pay it? there's no stipulation in my employment contract stating that i must be qualified (they didn't even ask for my certificate as proof!).

If i cease to become a member of CIMA, does that mean I'm not qualified anymore? Does it harm that aspect in any way?

Or can I still carry CGMA title next to my name, without being a member of CIMA? Surely i can, as CGMA just means you're a chartered management accountant, right? Or does 'chartered' mean you're a member of a body or organisation?

i just need to survive in this job for another 18 months and i'm done. Can i not defer my membership to CIMA for a few years or something and then forget about it altogether.

ANd then if something happens in a year for whatever reason and i need to change job or find a new job, i can reinstate my membership?

I could not get any answer on the CIMA website or in their forums, hopefully someone with some experience here knows?

many thanks

If you're paying them so much, why not phone them and find out from the horses mouth?

In the meantime, this will help.

if lack of capital letters incites you that much that you feel the need to post a derogatory and unhelpful comment, then i think youve got other problems in life you need to deal with.

hope you sort them out mate.

If you resign your membership you will not be able to describe yourself as a qualified accountant or as a member of CIMA.

I have no idea what CGMA is, but if it comes with being a CIMA member you will loose that with your CIMA membership if you decide to give it up.

Only you can decide whether these things matter to you more then the subscription you would be saving.

What does paying a subscription fee have to do with anything?

It entitles you to use the letters of that professional body. You can't expect to use the letters of a body you are no longer a member of.

what a fail.

The only thing failing is your attitude and writing ability.

Surely you can call yourself a chartered management accountant without being a member of the chartered body that bestows membership? Listen to yourself.

Surely you can't.

To the OP

If you're member of CIMA then you're governed by this. If you do not pay the subscription you will be removed as a member - see clause 4 on page 8. Once removed you cannot call yourself a chartered management accountant - full stop.

that's fine and it makes sense - but i'll still be qualified won't i? i assume qualification simply means that i fulfilled the requirements of the body that proves i meet the standards, hence the certificate in the post. I'll still be able to call myself qualified, if not chartered?

You will still retain your qualification if you relinquish your membership.

Should you apply for another job, I would be open that you are no longer a member. Showing the CIMA qualification without acknowledging you are no longer a member would be dishonest.

For the sake of roughly £275 per year, is it really worth giving up something you worked so hard for?

A qualified accountant is a member of one of the professional accountancy bodies. Someone who resigns from membership of one of those bodies then ceases to be a qualified accountant - but could pethaps call themselves a former qualified accountant who has voluntarily relinquished their qualification.
