Driving instructor sole trader mileage query

Driving instructor sole trader mileage query

Didn't find your answer?

I have a query which I would be most grateful if anyone could help in clearing up for me. Please confirm am I right in thinking a driving instructor can claim his mileage/car/running expenses in the following way: either 1) claiming 45p per mile for the first 10k miles and 25p thereafter. If he does this, he cannot claim any running expenses although could claim dual controls expenses as specific to his job. Could he also claim clutches etc which would run out more frequently due to the nature of his job? Also, if he does this he cannot claim the loan payments on the car itself but claim the interest. No capital allowances are also allowed. 2) claiming actual costs and capital allowance for the cost of the car ( it has been bought via a loan) and the interest element is deductible. My final question is this, if he has decided in his first year to operate under method 2 but wishes to change to method 1 he is not allowed to change method in theory until he changes his car, however if he decides to amend the original return this is a legal way of doing this? Many thanks in advance.

Statistics

Can't see why not.  But if you do, I'm not sure that you're right that he can claim the cost of modifications or start claiming that he needs extra clutches.

I've no stats to help you but I'm not sure you'd be much better off either way.  Unfortunately, you make your choice on the basis of what you think might happen, not what has happened.
