Hi All
I am trying to set up a data validation where the valid options are a tick symbol or a cross symbol.
Any ideas how I can achieve this?
Note, I DO NOT want the word tick or cross but the symbol. Y or N are not acceptable alternatives either!
Thanks

Are we talking about excel
If you are working in excel I change the font to Marlett. R is a cross a is a tick. You can build you verification of data around the r and the a with formula's.
This may be a very simple way of doing it and others may have better answers
Square root?
Can you cange the font on a dropdown?
I find the square root symbol, √ a decent substitute for a tick - (x works for a cross obviously)
Validation without a dropdown
Hi,
If you require the tick and cross to appear in a validation dropdown I don't think that can be done because the tick and cross symbols are not part of the ANSI character set on your PC.
However, if you merely wish to ensure that a tick or cross is what is entered into a cell you can put characters Alt+0251 and Alt+252 in a validation List and format the cells with the Wingdings font. Then, you key a cross with Alt+0251 and a tick with Alt+0252 (the numbers are keyed using the numeric keypad).
Probably not what you're looking for but the tick or cross will show in the cell and will be "validated".

Another option
On further reflection, those Alt + numeric keypad codes are not at all user friendly. I've been able to make it a bit more user friendly as follows:
Create a Name called Cross defined as =CHAR(251) and a Name called Tick defined as =CHAR(252)In A1 set up custom validation as =OR(CODE(T(A1))=251,CODE(T(A1))=252)
Instead of typing Alt+0251 and Alt+0252 you just type =Cross and =Tick. You see the tick or cross symbol in the wingdings formatted cell and the validation doesn't allow the entry of anything else.
P.S. I had to use the T function to get this to work. I'd be interested to know if anyone can get the validation to work with =Cross and =Tick in a more elegant way.
