I've used 1&1 for my domains and emails for years and have been satisfied with the service. However lately whenever I send emails to anyone using AOL they bounce back with an error report. I then have to email 1&1 support who may or may not respond and at some stage they 'lift a temporary block on my account by AOL' it'll work again for a day or so that we start the process again.
I was chatting to another accountant I know who has had exactly the same issue and it is apparent that 1&1 have much bigger fish to fry and arent terribly interested in resolving this so it's time to look at another company for my domain and emails.
Any suggestions on a reliable service which works well?

GMail and 123reg.com
I use Google's Gmail for my browser using my own email address. I use 123Reg.com for purchasing and registering my domains and use their dashboard for controlling all redirections. Using Google's GMail, which is cloud based, means you can read and write emails anywhere and not be bound to any computer or device.
I can't comment on this issue but do you find your website is slow for people when loading with 1&1?
UK2.net
Has a website builder, e-mails and customer service is excellent:

Can you transfer the domains
I use 1&1, but would like to transfer to someone else - but don't know how you go about transferring the domain.
(sorry to hijack)
Thanks
Why transfer ...
@tom123 - just redirect
and use 1&1 for the purpose of holding/renewing your domains
Doesn't really make sense transfer (and the aggro) when you can acheieve the same by a redirect to a host/provider of your choice
123reg
I've found 123reg ok for both email and domain names.
However web hosting was hopeless for database driven websites, eg wordpress or PHPBB - their servers simply couldn't cope. Ironically we transferred to 1and1 and things are far more reliable hosting wise.
are you sure the problem isn't with aol? I too am having problems sending to aol accounts (although no trouble receiving aol emails)
123-Reg and Vidahost
We use 123-Reg for domain hosting and they have been good over a number of years. The console is fairly easy to use and you can configure all the settings you may need.
For web site hosting my current preference is for Vidahost. They are a UK based company, so sites are hosted here. They provide all the standard packages such as WordPress and Joomla so you can set these up very quickly. Also their support is pretty good if you do have an issue.
AOL
I don't use 1&1 but whenever someone doesn't get my emails or I don't get theirs, it's typically someone with an AOL account.

123 reg and Vidahost are now owned by Godaddy, and since then Vidahost support has rapidly declined. I've been one of their clients for years and when Seb and Dom had it it was excellent. At some stage in the next few months I'll be switching to Hihosts but it's one of them round tuit problems, as I have a number of domains to move, and the web sites themselves are working fine.
Use your domain on 1&1 ...
@happy - after all if you have a domain (and web-site) the why are you not using it for mail (mail.domain.co.uk) ?
Most providers allow access via web-mail of some sort and if you have a scenario of POP on your office pc and IMAP on all other portable devices then you have the best of both worlds - access on the move & downloaded in the office. Alternatively IMAP for everything for 'shared' emails
SPF record ...
Try adding an SPF record to your email - may work; worth a try (gmail, hotmail & aol are all culprits)

1and1 poor service
I've been using 1and1 email hosting for 4 years now, sending 10,000 emails a year from multiple accounts. (I run a pay review web application)
In the last year their customer service standard have fallen through the floor. Their call centre staff don't speak very good English. If you raise a ticket they won't answer you for 24 hours. If you ask more than one question in a support ticket they will only answer the first one. I have the same bad experience dealing with technical support and billing enquiries.
Sorry for ranting about 1and1.
My advice when slecting an emal provider is to think about data protection. Your email contains tons of sensitive data stored on someone else's server. If someone accesses your email account they can reset all yur passwords.
Research the company's security measures. Are their data centres located in the EU? Are they ISO27001 accredited? Do they have a past history of security incidents?
Hi
Check out Internet Assist, go to www.ia.uk and select their hosting services.
Or give them a call on 01621 840014 and I am sure they will be able to help.
1 and 1, like godaddy, use shared virtual hosting, it's not that your small fry its that they restrict ALOT of php to protect other shared users.
Get a decent provider with full php and you won't go wrong.
