First time ECSL

First time ECSL

Didn't find your answer?

I have taken on a new client and an ECSL needs to be completed for them.

I would like to submit the ECSL online, but all the HMRC links are dead-end and they indicate I should be able to do in my account as an agent. I cannot see where to either do this or register to submit an ECSL within my agent account.

Any ideas where within the agent account I can do this?

I am registered as a VAT agent for other clients, but not yet for this client. Can I even submit an ECSL online for a client while I am not their agent yet?

Thanks

Not possible?

The last time I looked at this you could not submit a client's ECSL using your own agent's login.  Your client can register and you can use their login details.

At the moment I send them by post!!

HMRC

Although ECSL is part of the VAT "suite", HMRC seem to want to keep in separate in someway. In the past when I had to add it to the VAT services for a company, I had to wait for a pin to arrive - it couldn't just be "added on"!

Thanks Gary and NH.

The solution in the end was to get the client's own HMRC login from the previous accountant - I do think this is the only way to do it online, i.e. through the client's account.

If you log in as Agent and enrol for the VAT EC Sales List (ECSL) service, you can - and we do - file EC Sales Lists for clients.  I cannot remember, but I assume that we were sent an activation code.  You must also be appointed as the client's agent for VAT because, when you access the service as agent, the intro screen displays a list of VAT registration numbers (no names) for which you are allowed to file ECSLs.

ECSL by agents

https://www.gov.uk/vat-online-services-for-agents...

Your clients no longer have to sign up for HMRC online services before you can act on their behalf, except for the ECSL and RCSL online services, when your client must register and enrol for the service to enable them to appoint you

In view of the need for client to enrol themselves for the service before they can appoint an agent I find it common practice to use client's ID to file ECSL online.
