Cakes and other deserts not sold in the process of catering are zero-rated (group 1 - food), see: www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/vfoodmanual/VFOOD0200.htm

Google's a wonderful thing

It causes sweeping statements like this, that are not correct in their sweeping form. Ice cream is a dessert, and it is standard-rated

Cakes are cakes

Hi,

Whether wholesale or retail, a cake is a cake and is zero rated.

Obviously, the issue sometimes is, is it a cake (see Snowball case recently for latest issue on this)?!

Somewhat off-tangent, I did spot the other day that McVities had started selling a giant Jaffa Cake.  Proving of course it is a cake and a reminder of the large cake used in the famous VAT tribunal to prove the same point.  Giant versions of these sound a very good idea.  Reading this Tunnocks?

What about option to tax

With further reference to Novakova's :-

"Cakes and other deserts not sold in the process of catering are zero-rated",

I think you will find that deserts are not normally either standard-rated or zero-rated.  I have just obtained a generous advance, at minimal interest,  from PNL, to acquire the Kalahari and Gobi ; and there was no mention of VAT being added :)

No Options to Tax  re any of the structures?

Spinx for the memories

Made me think about my favourite Laurel and Hardy film, Sons of the Deserts.  Friends want to go to Lodge convention in another State, wives say no.  Husband invents illness, doctor paid to diagnose long sea voyage as recuperation.  Friends go to Lodge event ('Sea voyage').  Friends return from sea voyage to discover a) they have been filmed at the Lodge convention and this is being shown in cinemas b) vessel they are supposed to be sailing on has sunk, all lost at sea.  Oh dear, what a pickle!  81 years old and still a classic!

Car wash FRS %
Sorry did not see the car wash business query until now. Presumably added later?

Looking at FRS7200 http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/frsmanual/frs7200.htm the closest fit there appears to be 'cleaning services' which is indeed in the 'Business services that are not listed elsewhere' sector.
