Payroo without a doubt for me. Free up to 10 employees then only a charge to file P14s. They also have a bureau version so you can have all your clients in one place but they can logon to enter timesheets etc. It also has access for employees to logon and check payslips etc.

an obsession with free software is often dangerous

Free is just a different business model

I don't quite see how a paid for product is better value than free ? If it does exactly what you need and it's free I'm happy with that. These free products make an income in different ways, after all AWeb is free ! I'm not doubting Moneysoft, I know it's great, but it still doesn't have some of the features of say, Payroo.

I've just had a look at Payroo's site and I must say the product looks great - in fact, it looks too good to be true!

How can they produce this sort of stuff for free then when the likes of Iris are charging extorionate rates for payroll software?

How do they do it?

The same company sells the same software solution in several different ways. The 'free' payroo branded version is just one route to market. The same sofware is used by companies processing thousands of payrolls each month. The Payroo site was supposed to be funded by adverts but i have yet to see any. If you have more than 10 employees you do pay a small fee.

not on the  free business model whicjh i like  - its the attitude get it for free and then charge the clients a fortune

Do you pass on your charges for using free software .....

@carnmores - agree totally. The obsession with free software is a disappointing attitude

@gerrysims and others - supposing a posting was made about 'free accountants' on the site. There would probably be an interesting debate about valuing people time & how everything has a cost etc.

The free software question comes up periodically and whilst OpenSource or free business applications are a valid business model, never forget that they do cost the software house in development time

Presumably all those in the profession who use free software in this manner do not pass any charges onto their clients - or is it only a one way street?

passing on costs

All my clients pay their own software costs so I have no issues with this product. I take the view that the provider should be grown up enough to understand it's business model and wouldn't offer it if they thought it somehow unfair. I also think it's one of the better products being an online service with access rights for me, clients and employees so I would recommend it even if it were charging. In my view price doesn't always = quality. I use Sage too !

I would use free accounting

I would use free accounting software if it was good quality and the reason behind it made sense. I do - I use Quickfile, and jolly good it is too!
