Freelance Bookkeeper - need to benchmark rate, Gloucestershire

Freelance Bookkeeper - need to benchmark rate,...

Didn't find your answer?

I am looking for a benchmark rate for a freelance bookkeeper (in Gloucestershire). I have a person in place, who is experienced and proficient on Sage, works on their own initiative and requires little support. The work includes accounting adjustments and revenue recognition issues (it is for a charity, recognising grant income).

I think the incumbent is slightly underpaid, but am looking for evidence to support an increase. At this stage I don't want to post the current rate - but can if needed.

Many thanks.

Hourly rates

Hi,

I work for a gloucestershire firm of accountants and the bookkeepers we deal with charge between £12 and £15 per hour. Hope that helps.

Why do you need to benchmark ?

If you think that the person who you describe as "experienced and proficient on Sage, works on their own initiative and requires little support" is "slightly underpaid" then you have 2 choices - continue to pay them the same or pay them more.

Whatever other sub-contractors are paid is largely irrelevant - particularly as you will just be comparing "bookkeepers" which will not be a like for like comparison with the skills of your current sub-contractor.

Rates

I run a firm of accountants in Gloucestershire and know a couple of bookkeepers of varying quality.  A few are of decent ability and charge £15 - £20 per hour.  The one has plenty of practice experience and is pretty good.  Her charges start at £20 per hour and she likes to achieve £25 + per hour.
