Getting a tax reference
I've recently taken on a client, husband of an existing client. He's not worked in the UK for about 6 years (wife's a high flyer in the FCO and so has been posted abroad and he's gone with her).
He's now got some rental income which needs declaring (although probably below the tax threshold) - how do I go about getting him a tax reference?
Sorry - didn't make it clear
Sorry - didn't make it clear enough. He's now back in the UK so not a non-resident landlord.
And he's not self employed so a CWF1 doesn't apply. If he'd had PAYE income I'd just have written to his PAYE district but he has no idea what his last PAYE reference was since he last worked in this country about 7 years ago.
Should I just contact the Cardiff Self Assessment address?
There's a "Registering for 1 thanks
There's a "Registering for Self Assessment" pdf form on HMRC's website.
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/forms/sa1.pdf
He can also phone the helpline to request a return on 0845 900 0444
SA1 Form
Yes that is the form
However it seems to take 3-6 months for the system to roll into action.
In the last year three new clients has submitted the form the average time taken for a SA number was well over three months
So earlier the better

Non resident landlord
You will probably have to consider getting him to join the NRL scheme otherwise the tenant will have to deduct tax from his rentals if he is not UK tax resident - see link http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/international/nr-landlords.htm
Alternatively you might look here https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/shortforms/form/CWF1ST?dept-name=CWF1&sub-dept
Hope that this helps
