Goodwill write off - how quick?

If a transport company buys the goodwill from another transport company for (say) £500k. How quickly will the revenue be prepared to allow them to write it off?

In the past I would tend to write off over 5- 10 years but could the buyer choose to write off over two or even one year and get immediate C Tax relief?
