Hanging on the phone to HMRC for 20 mins...

Didn't find your answer?

20 mins I've been hanging on the HMRC's employers helpline. I have two payroll schemes that are no longer needed. I thought it would be easy to ring and tell them and the only phone number I can find to ring is the ordinary one - there is no Agents helpline. Any advice? or shall I write?

So frustrating!

I wrote to HMRC a few weeks ago with a client who needed a payroll scheme closing down.  I asked for the scheme to be closed "with immediate effect" and dated the letter 18th March.

They wrote back a few days ago requesting "clarification of the date you wish the scheme to be closed".

I would have thought that fairly obvious, but hung on for 20 minutes to confirm that it was 18th March...

My advice would be to write, and to ensure you state the desired closure date.  Hopefully that will do the job!

Phone early in the morning

Don't bother phoning after 8.00 am, which is the earliest you can ring. If you phone at 8.00 am you should get through quite fast.
