HMRC guidance on hire cars (not car leases)?

Didn't find your answer?

Hi,

I'm trying to work out what is allowable by way of expenses for someone who occasionally hires a car for business - e.g. actual costs - car hire and petrol costs, or does it need to be a mileage allowance?

Please could someone point me to the relevant bit of the HMRC website? I'm sure that it must be on there somewhere, but everything I've found so far seems to focus on leasing cars - whereas this is more a case of hiring a car for a week or two at a time several times a year.

Many thanks!

They are self-employed, btw.

BIM47750 says:

"If a taxpayer incurs expenditure on the hire of a car for not more than 45 consecutive days (short term hiring in) then they do not have to restrict the deduction for the hire expenditure of that car"
