HMRC Online

Didn't find your answer?

On the AWeb forum there are now at least five individual threads, which coincide with the difficulties HMRC is having with its online filing service.

From their service availability section, the only area which appears unaffected is "paying HMRC"!

From what I can gather, this situation has persisted since the end of last week and, up to now, I've failed to see any factual information, from HMRC's press/media department, nor any response from them, to members of this and other related websites.

A suitable directive (should we continue to try to file, when should we restart etc etc) would be extremely useful.

Without being too disrespectful, shouldn't Aweb also be taking the lead with this - contacting HMRC for a response, promoting the obvious difficulties?

Online activities are now a major part of the dynamic in the UK. I fail to see how anyone can consider the HMRC department fit for purpose, at the moment.

It wouldn't...

It wouldn't be so bad if we didn't have the constraints of the 'on or before' ruling and we had until, say, the 19th of the following month to submit data.

The annoying thing is that HMRC are so inflexible when sending out GNS and it is impossible to get through to anyone to sort out any problems for our clients.

HMRC have set up a new twitter account @HMRCCustomers and it makes interesting reading as nearly every tweet to them is about not being able to get through to anyone at a call centre. If the business I worked for was run in this fashion I don't think I would have a job for very much longer.

We should all raise formal complaints rather than just moan

If accountants got together in large enough numbers to formally complain to HMRC about their poor service levels we might just get the message through to someone that counts. Moaning will not lead to any substantial changes. I've tried to do my bit through Working Together but even that now seems to be ineffective - where are our professional institutes - isn't this exactly what they are for?

Announcement from HMRC this morning

"We’ve been advised that the Government Gateway issue has now been resolved and response times for submissions made from today are back to normal.

There is still a large backlog of responses messages which may take some time to clear through the system. Customers who are still waiting for a business response from Gateway should continue to poll for their response.

We apologise again for the inconvenience this has caused for you and your clients."

The Boy in the Bubble

I attended a seminar recently with some fairly senior HMRC staffers - specialists in their field.

The seminar was very useful - tchnically and practically - so no complaints there. But what came across loud and clear was the fact that these people worked in their own bubble at HMRC, completely untouched by the great unwashed public (or tax agents). It's not their fault - it's just the way it is.

I imagine this is exactly how the rest of HMRC's senior staff and policy wonks are working - in splendid isolation. E-filing problems are just theoretical to them - and probably they think it's 'jolly interesting'.
