HMRC unit identification number

HMRC unit identification number

Didn't find your answer?

When completing SA returns with PTP, I am getting warnings that the 'HMRC unit identification number is not entered on the year specific client details'.

Is this number to be found anywhere on the client details in the agent online screens?  If so I can't seem to spot it.

If I enter '1', the warning messages go away.

Does it matter if 1 is the wrong number anyway?

I hope not 'cos that's what I do too! I've never had any problems with that.

I ignore it

To be honest I keep meaning to find out what this is for but I completely ignore it. It does not seem to have any bearing on FBI submission.

I think I have read somewhere a long time ago

that the number you need to put in this box appears on the original notice from HMRC to the taxpayer at the start of the tax year. The original notice quotes the tax office reference number immediately followed by the number you need to put in the box. For example 126/01.

The number is not always a 1 - it can sometimes be a 2.

I have no idea what the difference between 1 and 2 is though...
