HMRC visit

Didn't find your answer?

I have just had a call from a client in a panic as an HMRC inspector just turned up on their doorstep!

It's due to VAT owed from 2012 for a limited company that he was previously a director of - obviously it should have been paid at the time etc etc but in the letter he's emailed to me which was given to him by the guy on the doorstep it says about the 'Taking Control of Goods' enforcement action - surely they cannot take goods from him personally if it's a company debt and the company has ceased trading - or can they?

Sounds murky

Was this a company that he was personally identified with before, did he have a shareholding stake, what arrangements were put in place when he resigned, who was notified of his resignation, what is the current state of the company, does it still exist or has it been written off?  These are some of the questions you, and he, need to get some answers about fairly quickly...
