HMRC won't let me set up online DD for PAYE

Didn't find your answer?

For the last 2 days I have tried to set up a direct debit for PAYE. After typing in all the usual guff and being presented with full details of what should then happen the screen refreshes to show that this service is currently unavailable. It's bad enough setting it up in the first place, but to be continually rebuffed is getting my blood pressure up.

Have you experienced the same thing recently? Naturally enough, there are no indicators on HMRC's website that this will be a problem.

Yes

It happens from time to time, yes.  Yes it is rubbish.  But it's Christmas party season so in the world of HMRC this is just fair anough.

Ring PAYE Debt Management Telephone Centre if still struggling

...and they'll set it up for you (0300 200 3810). Are you aware that it's not possible to set up a variable direct debit for PAYE yet (in contrast with VAT)? So, unless your HMRC bill is the same each month or quarter, it's probably not the best payment method for PAYE at the moment. You can of course set up a single direct debit payment each time but always allow around 4/5 days for set-up and fund clearance. You've missed the boat for this month (if a monthly payer).

Yes, I know what a pain the whole process is

My client is forgetful and a dedicated cheque writer. It's no good me explaining internet banking to him. He has missed the deadline several times in the past, and I offered to try this approach but warned him there could be problems.

I've not missed the boat at all. The deadline for Dec payroll is 22nd January, so I have time. If I continue to have problems setting up I will look at going back to the cheque option, perhaps with him giving me signed cheques for the rest of the year and me filling them in and posting them off.

I'm reluctant to give the details to PAYE Debt management. If the programming is so rubbish I will just abandon this method altogether.
