How good is OCRREX Auto Rec software?

How good is OCRREX Auto Rec software?

Didn't find your answer?

We are considering purchasing OCREX Auto Rec software to scan and analyse paper bank statements for manual jobs.

We have seen a demo and would love to hear AW member's views on how good in practice this software is, how good is the support etc?

Many thanks in advance for any comments.

ocrex

I have used it for about two years and it saves substantial time on jobs, once you get into the way of it. I have only had one (emailed) support query and response was quick, and solved the issue. I haven't used alternative products so can't compare.

Auto Rec Low Quality OCR

I tried it, and found the quality of the OCR to be not very good. I found I could achieve a better result with the Adobe OCR function, although I hear Able2Extract is very good too.

I didn't use the reconciliation function.

I have been using Able2Extract for about 8 months following a recommendation from Paul.

The output you get largely depends on the layout of the document you are scanning. Barclays bank statements are printed in colours. Sometimes the scanner struggles to separate some data and you get the odd errors. The worst are copied bank statements where the DRs and CRs appear on a single column. Halifax and Lloyds banks statements are the best ones and you could get almost 100% accuracy. I do not know if the quality of the scanner also affects the output. I use 8 years old scanner

Find it very good
I find it very good especially where bank statements do not have a date on every transaction and / or have narrative which goes beyond a single line.
Don't think there is a Mac version though.
Support I have used extensively re bank print outs in discontinued formats or from bank's internal documents. Absolutely first class.

Love it!
Been using Autorec since March this year and it's brilliant. Saves us loads of time analysing bank statements. As mentioned above though you do need to get the resolution of your PDFs high enough.

More Feedback ...

Thanks AGAIN for all the positive reviews!!!!! OCRex has quite a few testimonials and case studies on our website too. It will give you an idea of what our customers think.  Click for Case studies or testimonials.

There also is a lot of feedback on these other discussions on accountingweb

@chatman - Regarding the quality of the OCR not being very good, we do have recommended scanner settings that produce the optimal results for OCR, data extraction. If a user does not follow these recommended settings there is a pop up box within AutoRec that will inform them what the scanner settings are and will advise the user that they might want to rescan their statements. Also if a user does not follow the recommended scanner settings, the recognition will not be as good or as accurate. We have step by step guides listed in our help section which are easy to follow.

The scanner settings are 300 DPI and greyscale or colour. These settings are available on a standard office scanner. The proof is in the pudding though when our customers are giving OCRex good reviews, time and time again. With AutoRec we have free training sessions included in all of our packages so you will be good to go straight away.

I also tried Able2Extract to see what it was like. Myself and a colleague spent over an hour trying to extract data from a statement but still did not manage to produce anything or even a spreadsheet file so I gave up. What’s different about the OCR extraction technology of AutoRec is that our developers have created a unique template for each and every type of statement we support. Currently AutoRec recognises over 150 different types of statements whether online, paper, PDF, credit card, visa, Amex, etc.

These were good quality scans, sent to OCRex and OCRd by them. No-one mentioned the quality of the scan to me.

OCR

@chatman. I am disappointed that you were not happy with the quality of the OCR. I would like to look into it for you to see what exactly happened. If you are interested in me looking into this for you please email me at [email protected]. Or if you have another job coming in over the next few months I'd happily set up a free trial for you using your statements. A member of our team will go through the trial with you through an online screen share. We can then send you the exacted data in a spreadsheet after the trial ?
