We have a client who has been (quite happily) on 0T PAYE code for an income source.
HMRC took it upon themselves to adjust it, for a load of trivia, ending up with a net positive code, where 0T in fact remains more appropriate.
So I phoned HMRC to get it put back to 0T and virtually had to complete a tax return over the phone most of which I had to dream up out of thin air.
I can sort of understand getting the third degree if we were trying to increase the code, but I really think that they should accept a request for a reduction on the nod. The only issue of concern should be whether there is some software issue that physically prevents the requested code.
Roll on the day when as "super-agents" we shall be able to amend the codes for ourselves.
With kind regards
Clint Westwood

We had a similar issue trying to get HMRC to remove job expenses from a tax code even though the client had changed employer and no longer paid any expenses. Had to insist on speaking to a supervisor who had to call us back to understand why it should be removed from the coding!
