How long does it take to get a National Insurance number for Irish national?

How long does it take to get a National...

Didn't find your answer?

It's my first time taking on an Irish client.

He's living in the UK and will be self-employed, although all his work will be for Irish companies.

Thinking about it, this is my first ever client with no National Insurance Number or UTR.

Does anyone have recent experience of this and, if so, can you tell me how long the issue of the NINO is likely to take.

Thanks

Not long

Get him down to the Jobcentre, fill in some forms, show them some id (they'll tell you what to bring if you call to make an appointment), usually issued within a week.

I don't have any foreign self employed clients but I've done payroll for a company that's employed dozens of overseas workers over the past ten years - both EU and non-EU.  The hardest task is to get the employee down to the Jobcentre.  They never see the urgency.  I keep telling them, "don't be thinking you can come to me when it's time to draw your pension.  I'll be dead by then."
