How long for a personal UTR

How long for a personal UTR

Didn't find your answer?

I asked for a UTR online before Christmas for a client who needs to file after 5 April. The acknowledgement email said a reply should take 4-6 weeks, which is a pretty sucky service. What is even worse is that 8 weeks later he's still waiting. How much longer should I expect to wait, who should I complain to and when?

Speak to HMRC and ask them for an update in the first instance as to why they have breached the time stated.

May be a reasonable explanation.

If not consider registering for and contacting the Agent Account Manager service?

Unfortunately it is a chicken and egg situation - you want a UTR and they won't speak to you without the clients UTR.

It seems that no matter what you request the turn round time for the most basic things are 4,weeks.

I believe that post isn't even opened for 8 weeks in some cases.

4 weeks ?

Try 4 years! advised HMRC multiple times of need for SA for one client, she's even paid the tax, but no nothing, nothing. Given up we have.

Not sure if this helps

Found an old email from a colleague on this subject:

"I’ve just had a few interesting conversations with HMRC. But found that if we have sent them a 64-8 say a month or two ago but they still won’t let us through security, if you ring 0845 915 8582 and tell them that you want to find out where the 64-8 is, the likely hood is that they have it but they haven’t updated their system.

In this case they should update their system while your on the phone and then within 5 mins you can ring HMRC again with the query."

This was a few years ago and not sure if the number would even work these days but perhaps someone knows an equivalent.

Almost 4 months
and I'm still waiting. Just how bad are things at HMRC these days? I know they've had more redundancies but is there anyone left?
