IMAP or POP3 for email on mobile phone

IMAP or POP3 for email on mobile phone

Didn't find your answer?

I have just bought a new Android phone and am going to set it up to receive emails. It really wont be used very often at all just on the odd days I am away from the office. But not sure on whether to set it up as IMAP or POP3?

I want all emails received and sent left on my office PC so that I can file them using Techhit, and would like the emails to be deleted from my mobile without having to do it manually once they are deleted from my PC.

If you want them on multiple locations then it has to be IMAP as Pop3 will download them off the server to whichever devices "calls" them first.  However IMAP emails are always stored on the server unless you configure your office computer to download them but Im not 100% how to do that to be honest.  I used IMAP for years with no problems before switching to an Exchange server.

IMAP

You can set POP3 to download emails but leave a copy on the email server so other devices will also get a copy.

Depending on how you setup IMAP a copy of the email is usually downloaded to your local device so you can read them when you don't have an internet connection, changes can also be set to replicate back to the server.

Personally would go with IMAP.

IMAP

Another vote for IMAP from me.

IMAP means everything's always synchronised, all email filing/backup programmes I've used cope with it happily, and you can get exactly the same information on 1 computer as on 42* other devices.

POP3 I've always had issues with synchronising the deletion of content, alhough I have used the 'leave on server' feature in the past to make sure all PCs I'm using were able to download a copy of any email I received, I found it too messy to try to truly synchronise accounts stored in different localities.

*Note 42 is just indicative, but when looking for an exemplar number it's always the number to use. (Unless you're my son who think's 4 is the right answer to everything because that's how old he is)

IMAP is the future.

I think (the tech lads will correct me I am sure) IMAP is where its at now and POP3 is deemed to old hat.

IMAP is effectivly the new "Black"

LOL

Thank you very much.

I assume if I use IMAP once I delete messages from my office PC I will also need to go through and delete them on my phone periodically?

I am concerned I am going to be manually deleting a huge volume of emails from my phone every few days.

I assume you have set this up by now but the answer should be that you would not need to delete files on the secondary device. IMAP should keep control of that for you. I haven't used Techhit for filing emails but we use eFiler and I am sure it works in a similar way which relies on the IMAP to sync the files and file them on your work PC. Ultimately a google apps account or hosted exchange is the ultimate solution from my experience as they 'just work'.
