Keytime to TaxCalc ?
I'm thinking of moving from Keytime to TaxCalc.
I run a small one man practice and am about 3 years away from retirement. I use Keytime for my SA Returns (about 100) and while I find them OK, they are no more than OK. Had a demo of TaxCalc and it looks just as good and is a bit cheaper. Anyone else made a switch either way between the 2 ? which did you prefer. Don't need CT600 or accounts production, I'm only interested in their personal and partnership returns.
Many thanks
.
I did the same as Kevin. Cant comment on current quality of Keytime, but at the time 6 years(?) ago It was streets ahead and cheaper too.
I moved over to Taxcalc last
I moved over to Taxcalc last year after a few years with Keytime.
I had Taxcalc years ago (before they had a year or 2 break from selling in the UK) and had the new demo and it was a lot cheaper than Keytime.
Found it excellent, support very helpful. For instance I enquired if I could get hold of previous versions as I occasionally do older tax returns and within 10 minutes I had been given unlimited licences for 3 years of returns.....
Let me know if we can help
Sorry to hear that you are thinking about moving away Frank.
Naturally, we'd love to keep you as a customer, so I've asked your account manager to see if there is anything we can do to make staying with us more comfortable. I'm also more than happy to hear your thoughts on what we could do to improve the software - a PM here, an email to jim.mackenzie@keytime.co.uk, or a chat on the phone, whichever works best for you.

Btw just so you dont think I am blowing smoke up taxcalcs behind, their accounts production software is very weak (!)

This doesn't sound good. You would expect this sort of treatment without threatening to leave.

Hi Chatman,
I can't say that I agree with the first part of your post, but I do absolutely agree with the second. I don't see Frank's original post making a threat; just a statement that he is considering his options as he approaches retirement (which is wholly prudent). I've then made a friendly reply, letting him know we'll try and make staying with us the most comfortable option. Normally, we'd hold this sort of conversation during one of our account management calls; in this case, I thought it would be polite to let Frank know we were looking into it for him.
The offer to talk about how we can improve our software is always on the table, for current customers, customers of a decade ago, anyone who is thinking about joining us, our competitors - we're happy to hear from anyone. Reiterating that offer shouldn't be seen as an extraordinary measure. The same goes for looking into how we can do more to make the relationship better; we're always looking at ways to make doing business with us mutually enjoyable (and profitable) for all accountants.
You can see a selection of comments about us in this thread: http://www.accountingweb.co.uk/anyanswers/question/recommendations-self-assessment-tax-return-software - you'll notice that I made the offer to talk about what we can do in that thread too :)

Salesman's Talk
I wasn't criticising the OP, and I am sure no-one else took it that way. I was just saying that it is too late if you wait till someone has decided to leave you before offering to help. I wouldn't stick with a software company that did that.

I did that about 10 years ago & haven't looked back...
I had some issues with Keytime that we never resolved. Luckily the product quality & support you get from TaxCalc are far superior (in my opinion!).
