local link up

Didn't find your answer?

I had a cold call today from this company and am tempted. They promise to get me on the first page of Google for a nominal sum each month. No set up fee, no long contract. Anyone done this... Or even heard of them?

Yes

I know somebody who used to work at a company that did this.

But.... where are you currently located on Google?  If you include the right narrative on your website, and submit your website URL to google, then you can get on Page 1 anyway?

I got my website to be the top hit on page 1 (based on company name) using that approach.  Of course, you might want to appear for a different criteria (e.g. London accountant) which might be more difficult....

They are charging £30 per

They are charging £30 per month to have me on the 1st page of google for over 170 of the top serach phrases on google, such as 'accountant sheffield' etc

I'm not currently on the 1st page for accountant + first part of my postcode which is disappointing really.  Google places seems to dominate and I am their 'I' listing which is on a 2nd page.  My local competion is listed at the top of google places with a very simple landing page type website and I dont get it!

This sounds too good to be

This sounds too good to be true!

I've met the owners of a few SEO companies, most of whom are charging >£1000 a month for this sort of services - even small companies (private dentists, small hotels etc) are paying this and much more.

My fear would be that this outfit are using "black hat" SEO methods - e.g. buying lots of cheap backlinks etc - and if/when Google find out, you run the risk of them delisting your website altogether.

I think the cheap safe way of doing it is making sure the copy on your website is good and relevant and full of your key words and it should rise up the ranks naturally.

I think they are using 'back links'.  What they get onto google is a landing type page which you then can link to your website.

There's no fixed term contract. So im thinking its low risk?

How do you know what the keywords are to move up the rankings naturally?  I'd far rather develop my own page but dont know how to myself.

Hmmm.

I give the whole "search engine optimisation" a wide berth.

Save your money and use it t put lots of relevant content on your site.

If you search for "tax software" on google we come up towards the top (3rd after the "paid fors" when I just tried it) and do none of that "optimistation" stuff.

Try pay-per-click.

For £30/month you could get at the top of the sponsored ads. Better than the bottom of the free ones.

The key words are just the combinations of words that a potential client of yours would type into Google to try and find you e.g. "accountant sheffield", "tax advisor sheffield", "VAT registration sheffield" etc.

You need to drop those key words into your website text as much as possible. And Google likes "content rich" websites so if you combine the keyword repetition with lots of articles about accounting, tax etc you will be promoted for that too.

For an example of a really well search engine optimised website look at SJD Accountancy - top of the list for the Google search terms "accounting contractors" and absolutely packed full of the words "accounting" and "contractors", as well as useful content for contractors.

Caveat I'm not an expert on this but just repeating what I've heard from some that are!
