Anyone have any smart ideas about how to source good qualified accountants with practice experience without having to fork out a small fortune to recruitment consultants.

We're a small but fast growing practice in central London and we're keen to take on an experienced client manager on £40k - £45k.  The sort of fees we'd have to pay a recruitment consultant to source the right individual represent a significant financial risk for a business of our size but our attempts at finding candidates from other sources have been pretty unsuccessful to date.  The general quality of CV's on GAAPWeb / Monster Jobs etc. seem to leave a lot to be desired.

Anyone have any bright ideas?

Look at it from a candidate perspective

Unfortunately from a candidate perspective there is no compelling reason for me to trail newspaper ads or fire off speculative letters, as there is enough demand at the moment in my industry/location (London). It costs me nothing to go via a recruiter (as a candidate) and there is enough demand hence I think good candidates tend not to need to do direct application route/free job boards as they can usually get a number of interviews easily and would never know you even had a role available.

Have you tried advertising on the ACCA/ICAEW websites?
What about putting a linkedin/facebook/twitter post out to your network? Also I am not sure what linkedin charge for an actual job advert but I do look at the jobs they send me out of curiosity more than anything else as they are relevant to my skills/experience. You could also try offering referral fees to current staff so they do the same to widen the network search.
You could also try the opportunities section on Aweb!

My wife uses Linkedin exclusively for recruitment ...

of professionals. The response seems escellent and the quality very good.

Interesting : does your wife post a job advert or approach specific individuals (eg. following a serach for say "Accountants" in "Birmingham" etc.) ?

Also, are individuals approached "cold", do you know before you approach them whether they are looking for a new job ?

Thanks all.  Some really useful suggestions especially on the LinkedIn Google search.  Had tried LinkedIn but found it very hard to narrow the field down to relevant profiles so will definitely try this.
