My Dell printer sounds like a hammer drill

My Dell printer sounds like a hammer drill

Didn't find your answer?

When printing my Dell c1765nfw lets out a deafening noise like a hammer drill that lasts for as long as the print operation.

The quality of the print is fine and there is no noise when the printer is idle (except for when its warming up when first switched on).

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is and a possible solution? I have put this up on Dell's community forum, but no response.

Thanks in advance.

Really hard to tell

It's really hard to tell without seeing it but as it's a laser (well LED) then it won't have many moving parts which could make a noise like that but potentially could be one of the cogs which are used to move various parts and guide paper through the machine.

If the printer has a manual feed option then try using this and see if the problem still occurs, if it doesn't then it will be something between the paper tray and the printing mechanism, if it does then it's something at the top of the machine.

You've got me reminiscing...

... in my first job they used to print all the payslips for the payroll clients on a big daisywheel printer. It had it's own noise-reducing box to live in. It sounded exactly like that.

Perhaps your printer was a daisywheel printer in a former life and has regressed. Have you been hypnotising it?

I get a cement mixer noise when my HP laser printer prints

In my case it is almost certainly my fault. I print on one side of the paper and if I don't need to send it anywhere or file it I will save the discarded paper to print on again. If only I stuck to just doing that.

When rooting out obsolete reports from dusty files prior to hauling them into my loft I tear off the side where staples were and keep the rest of the paper to print on the other side. Unfortunately, very occasionally I miss the odd staple and only sometimes notice it with horror as my machine gobbles it up. That of course damages the roller.

The dreadful noise started about 3 months ago and although I only usually get a damaged roller (now it's cheaper to replace whole machine), this time prints appear to be OK, but I suspect a staple has found its way to the roller at the back of the machine. I can't be bothered to take the thing apart (slightly nervous it won't go back together anyway). Once I finish the replacement toner (another 6 months to go, unfortunately) I shall buy a new machine and try to curb my enthusiasm for using old filed paper.

Being a male person, I'm sure you're braver than me and a dab hand with a screw driver. I'll bet something's got caught near the roller mechanism and you can get your machine sorted just by taking a few bits off.

Our Brother printer

Makes the same hammer drill sound but it still works so we put up with it until it blows up. We have a new one ready though

although the new and unused one is probably out of warranty by now...
