New Practice - Which Software?

I've recently started my practice and was wondering what software I should be looking at and for recommendations. I intend to provide monthly and statutory accounts prep, CT returns, self assessment returns and VAT returns

I intend to buy an accounting package (Sage 50, Xero, etc), a year end accounts production package (e.g.: VT) and Self Assessment software (e.g.: TaxCalc). Should I also look at Corporation Tax software?

My clients will be SMEs or sole traders so I do not expect to be producing hugely complex accounts or tax returns. However I am keen to have the functionality to produce detailed management accounts and analysis on a monthly basis. Therefore I need an accounting package that includes features such as cost centres/departments, customised reporting, customised chart of accounts, etc. Also the functionality to upload journals, cash postings, etc from Excel/csv files is essential. I would much prefer a package that has integrated online VAT submission.

I have used Sage 50 before so was intending to go down that route, although it does seem quite expensive at £595 for five companies (£25 extra for five more companies, etc - up to £900 for 200 companies). I have also had a play with VT Cashbook but this looks like it's fine for preparing accounts for compliance purposes but is very limited for management information.

Any thoughts are much appreciated

Get best of breed rather than integrated.
