Not for profit theatre group, register, paye?

Not for profit theatre group, register, paye?

Didn't find your answer?

Good afternoon

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

A friend has recently taken over the running of a fairly informal theatre group.

They put on shows in the medical sector, sometimes once a year, sometimes a few times a year.

They do charge for the shows, to cover costs of scenery/props and the members do get paid for their time, a small amount is left in the kitty for incidentals, but they claim no actual profit is made.

I do not believe they are registered as a charity.

As I say they have always been run in a very informal manner, but now my friend has taken over she has come to me for advice to ensure everything is run as it should be.

I have never dealt with NFP before, but my instinct says that they do not fall into the NFP ruling and would really be a business that admittedly makes no profit.

However I would be inclined to think that they need to register with HMRC as a Business Partnership with all of the regular cast members, would this be correct?

Would they need to also go through paye to pay the members, if not how should they proceed with paying cast members?

Thank you for any help
