I have identified the following weaknesses in Clearbooks VAT accounting:
1. The user must actively tick "include historic transactions", otherwise you only get transactions dated within the specified dates - typically the quarter start and end date. In the new client concerned, this has meant several hundred transactions in the accounts but not on VAT returns because users forgot the need to tick this box.
2. Two sales credit notes posted to the system ticking the box "adjust VAT return" did not adjust the VAT return.
3. Several journals posted to the VAT input account as "adjust VAT return" adjusted only the box 7 figure and not the box 4 figure.
Has anyone else come across issues like these? If so, have you found a remedy? Note I have raised the last 2 on the Clearbooks forum, the first one about 3 weeks ago and the journal one only an hour ago when I came across it.
At this stage my advice to the client is to submit a VAT return several thousands different from Clearbooks as I have an audit trail from the Clearbooks version to the amount I am advising. Not great.

Hi Mr M
With regard to 1. there has to be a tick box option otherwise historic transactions that you may have used to establish previous year's accounts all come flooding into all future returns. Although a bit tongue in cheek, if the user knew about the need to tick the box (it is mentioned on the guide) but forgot to use it then there is perhaps some shared responsibility here?
I'm confused by 2. as there is no "adjust VAT return" box on a sales credit note? Do you mean journal entries?
With 3. I've never had a problem with this, so it may be a bug, have you asked support?
If you want to email me screen shots or details to [email protected], plus the user's URL, I'd be happy to look into 2 & 3 in more detail.
Cheers
EDIT:
I've just been on the Community site and Support asked you for details of the user 3 weeks ago with regard to the credit notes, did you give them? It also appears as though the Journal Entry issue was resolved by kind Kevin earlier today, you had posted it to the VAT payable account rather than VAT control. Are you OK now?
Clearbooks Vat
Just as an addition to both Pauls and Kevins responses, you have a tick box option in Sage as well for any unreconciled transactions from a previous period so point 1 is not really unique to Clearbooks.
