Opinions and advice needed

Didn't find your answer?

Good Afternoon,

I have recently qualified in AAT Level 2 book keeping and i eventually want to start my own book keeping business, but would first like to ask a few questions.

In my previous role as an accounts assistant, part of my job was to enter the sales/purchase invoices into the sales day book and GL. I also totalled the purchased day book and ledger and took out the balances. Occasionally i posted payments from the cash book to GL. With the practical experience and study knowledge gained from AAT level 2, am i biting off more than i can chew by starting up my book keeping business without gaining practical experience in all book keeping areas. I have tried to source voluntary book keeping work and have had no luck. Because i have 2 small children i am limited to evenings or weekends and most of the charities or accountants i have emailed/called dont work evenings or weekends.

Is it correct that i can only offer my services up to Trial balance? I think from reading on another forum, i can only practice what i have learnt in the qulaification?

I also have a level 2 Sage payroll qualification which i believe i can offer as part of my service, again is this correct?

Is the letter of clearance a requirment or is it down to personal preference? Apart from the letter of engagement, are there any other document/s required for potential new clients.

Sorry for the long post and numerous questions.

Thanks

Nicla

I'm presuming you are an AAT student member and as such they would set out the limits of what services you can offer so you would need to check with them.

Personally i would say AAT level 2 wouldn't prepare you enough to offer bookkeeping services and this might be an obstacle to gaining clients because they would probably expect a greater level of knowledge.

There's a good area on this site for start up practices which would be well worth a read and will answer many of the questions you have and probably some you don't have yet.

Hi,

I did ring the AAT and the person i spoke to wasnt very helpful, other than telling me you can practice what you have studied in the qualification.

I forgot to mention that i am about to start studying for a qualification in AAT Level 3, which will give me alot more of an insight.

I think that you can only be an AAT MIP if you are a full member of AAT and without being an MIP you can't offer any services. Unfortunately i think you'll have to try AAT again and hopefully speak to someone more helpful and ask them specifically if you can offer services as a student member.
