A client made a silly but understandable mistake.
He set up a direct debit to collect quarterly VAT. He thought that the direct debit would be taken on the 7th of the month, not realising that direct debits are taken three working days later.
When he didn't see the payment taken on the 7th, he panicked and made a debit card payment only to find about the duplication when the direct debit was taken.
When I called HMRC after waiting over 20 minutes to talk to an adviser, I was told that refunds are taking between 30 and 60 days. When I told him that I found this outrageous he said that I was the first person who had ever objected.
Is there anything that my client can do, I suspect not but thought 'If you don't ask you don't get'.

Had similar and they said would take weeks to pay it back.
Ended up cancelling the direct debit for the next VAT quarter and paying them the difference, so client in affect paid them early for part of the next VAT Return.
