I run a small accounting practice dealing with about 300 clients, the majority of whom are very small.
I was wondering if it would be worthwhile considering a paperless solution, and if so what product would similar sized practitioners recommend?

Absolutely
We run a paperless office - scan everything as it comes in into Dropbox
Return all clients records once we are done with them
PaperLess office is much more than just getting rid of paper
A PaperLess office is much more than just getting rid of paper, especially when you provide bookkeeping services to your clients. You must be sure to look for a solution that allows you to not only reduce the paper volume but that allows you to have your documents directly attached to the corresponding transactions in your accounting software and that enables you to give access to your clients to look at their own transactions and documents.
By doing this you don't even have to scan documents, since your clients will be sending them directly to you. All this together allow you to save time, money and get better organised.
Of course Dropbox allows you to convert paper documents into digital files, but in my opinion you won't you will still be experiencing the same problem of organising all data and find them quickly. Adding to this, whenever you have digital files it is so much easier to make even more copies, which will create even more problems in terms of getting all the information well organized.
Hope I could help.
Paperless Office - yes please
I can relate to your question.
In 2002 I moved into an office from working from home and found 1.5 feet of filing to do. Oops
I took the plunge and we went paperless and xerox was the only solution. The world passed us by and in 2012 I knew that we had to get a better system.
Having asked lots of practioners, the 2020 group and lots of others I started looking.
In 2013 I opted for Docusoft (www.docusoft.net). Three main reasons. They had been approved by the ICEAW and I was able to talk to the main developer. Finally I wanted a product that would be continually inovating. I have not been disappointed there is paperless office, with a CRM integrated which means my database of clients connects with their records and there is a direct portal which means that we can upload documents with out any effort.
In my opinion you need the paperless office because you are probally already past the point where the use of dropbox is costing the practice money because of time to sort the files.
If you want more help pls private message me. My practice is 20 years old this year.
