Payment to an intern

Does anybody know the legalities of taking on and paying an intern?

From my research I know that of course there is the intern minimum wage but if they have offered to work for free to gain experience do I still have to pay them?

Also, what are the rules on a foreign intern? Does the UK minimum wage for interns still apply?
