Pivot tables
I can't thank tom123 and adam.arca enough. They were one of a number that answered my question recently on csv files and pointed me in the direction of pivot tables.
I've never learnt to use pivot tables before as they looked fairly complicated and I didn't see any relevance to my particular way of working. But, having read their comments, I looked at PTs again and worked through the tutorials here on AWeb and realised that they weren't half as difficult as I had at first thought.
It will take a bit more practice on my part before I gain real familiarity with their use but I am getting there. The only thing is that, far from saving me time in the future, I will in actual fact be forever manipulating data using my new found skills. Thanks a bunch tom and adam :)
This obviously isn't a question. More of a suggestion that, if you haven't tried pivot tables yet, give them a try. It's well worth the time.
@cparker87 1 thanks
If you click on Discussions at the top of this page, then scroll down to ExcelZone you will see a link to "Start here to learn about pivot tables".
The tutorials are based on Excel 2003 but I found it fairly easy to see where I was in Excel 2007.
Enjoy
Very glad to see you have looked at pivots. You will soon find that, as well as dealing with imported data, your default approach to your own spreadsheets is 'how can I use pivot tables to make my task easier,

Steve's threads have alerted me to the navigational issues around the tutorials and we'll put some effort in over the next few weeks to make them more accessible to everyone else. In the meantime, you can find more pivot table-related content on the PivotTables tag page, and the ExcelZone discussion group that Steve has already mentioned.

I remember being in your position several years ago, and owndering how I will ever understand Pivot tables but they are very intuitive and I have found it quite easy to explain how to use them to colleagues.
