Why is it we cannot use commercial software to amend priors years returns. I've had to amend a clients' return. I wrote a letter, it's been processed incorrectly and now they are demanding the tax. I've written to amend again but still waiting.
When you phone they say, well, we'll wait but you'd better get it amended and you say, well i'm waiting on HMRC and they don't care!!

Sage software certainly allows you to amend self-assessment returns provided you are within the time limit, under HMRC tax rules you can only amend the return within 12 months of the HMRC filing date. Therefore the 2011 returns can be amended up to 31 Jan 2013. It is now too late to amend a 2010 self-assessment return which is why the software won't let you do it.
If you wish to amend the earlier year you will need to write to HMRC claiming overpayment relief (was previously error/mistake claim).
