Processing of 64-8 forms

Processing of 64-8 forms

Didn't find your answer?

Is anyone else having problems getting forms 64-8 forms processed by HMRC? I sent one on 11/12/14 and one 17/12/14, neither of which have been processed.  I can't speak to HMRC to get info for the tax returns, as no authorisation in place, and obviously this is needed before 31/1/14.  Anyone know if photocopies may be accepted?

Why do you need information from HMRC?

You know the UTR, so you can file tax returns using proprietary software, although I understand that you would need to be appointed as the agent in order to file a client's tax return using HMRC SA Online services.

However, what info do you need from HMRC which you cannot get from the client?

Tax from an earlier year being recovered through PAYE?  Just look at the client's PAYE coding notice.

Rate of state pension?  Wouldn't trust the HMRC website.  Just look at the client's letter from the Pensions Service at the start of the year or at his bank statements.

I think that it can take 4 weeks for them to process a 64-8. In the old days they would accept one that you faxed over to them. I think that your only answer is to call them.

.

Why are you not doing them online?

Yes they do fall over now and again but typically take about 2 weeks to arrive and how ever long it then takes the client to bother to give it to you.

Online/by Post

Although I default to online, clients are not always great at getting the codes to me within the 28 day window and some fail more than once in which case I fall back on a paper 64-8.

I filed one in October/November by paper and was shocked to be authorised within a week.

However the paper one I posted 07/01/15 is not yet authorised and I need this to submit the first VAT return for a newco by 31st January so the system may let me down.

Great question by the way - exactly what I want from Aweb at this time of year!

Tim

Set up a separate client User ID online and you can use this to submit the VAT return, rather than use your agent ID.

5 to 6 weeks is my current experience.

I'm still reluctant to rely on the online authorisation.

The reason being that I had instances in 2014, that whilst that process, including the client authorisation code exchange, worked for filing accounts (et al) online, it didn't tick the 64-8 box at HMRC phone helpdesk - ie. they still wouldn't talk to me.

Maybe HMRC have joined the dots now, I'd like to think so, but if they don't it's another 5 - 6 weeks.
