I work as a freelance bookkeeper/administrator and use Sage or just excel for my clients. A potential new client has quickbooks - does anyone know if this will be user friendly (as I am used to Sage) or can I get hold of a free trial anywhere??

Yes - very!
I have been a long-term user of QuickBooks, both the desktop version (QB) and the newer, online version (QBO). If you can use Sage, you'll be able to learn QB or QBO extremely quickly as it is much more intuitive than Sage and very user-friendly. As a professional bookkeeper, if you sign up for the free Cloud ProAdvisor Programme, you'll even get free classroom training on QBO.
From the links above, you can also get a free trial of QBO to play with. I've not used the desktop product for some years, but take a look here for some information.
Yes
For anyone who's experienced in book-keeping, especially in Sage, QB is a breath of fresh air. Yes, it's different, but the learning curve is short. The main things that people find hard to adapt to are the flexibility, i.e. no strict period or year end procedures as everything is date sensitive (not by period). From an accountant/reviewers point of view, it's brilliant as it's very easy to create loads of reports and you can click anything to drill down to see the analysis, right back to the invoice entry itself. It's also remarkably easy to change any entry, eg., to correct it's analysis. But like all the others, particularly Sage, if the data entry has been done by someone who's not doing it properly, the reports etc will be rubbish - garbage in, garbage out!
Agreed
QuickBooks is much more straightforward than Sage which is now looking like Soviet era software!

Thank you All!! Sounding
Thank you All!! Sounding positive which is making me feel more positive about it too... I may well be back to you all when I run up against something I don't understand ;-)
New Dashboard
I have never really used QB before but I am recent convert. The new Accountant Dashboard is excellent and I am now going to use it for all in house bookkeeping and for contractor clients. I think the output and presentation of reports are very good and look quite good for clients and happy for them to go to 3rd parties like banks etc.
The new release is very attractively priced and compares well with Xero features wise.
The marketing suite and training facilities for accountants is also a good added value function to the suite.
