Hi can anyone tell me how I can pay an employee in Quickbooks 2012 when they have no NI number yet? I'm supposed to be able to do this. Apparently temporary format TN/dob/gender aren't used any more?

Have you tried just leaving the NI number blank?

Try just not filling in the NI number. That is the correct approach as far as HMRC is concerned when the NI number is not known.

I can confirm that TN numbers have been forbidden for about 10 years now.

No Quickbooks say you cannot pay an employee without an NI number but I know HMRC guidance is that you can.

Sometimes support staff aren't completely clued up.

According to this Intuit thread it is possible to push employees with no NI Number through their payroll software:
