Reclaiming mileage on a Self-Assessment Tax Return

Reclaiming mileage on a Self-Assessment Tax Return

Didn't find your answer?

I think this is a silly question, but I just want to double check -

I have a friend who is employed and does a lot of business mileage (about 9,000 for this tax year). She is only reimbursed 30p per mile and as she can claim up to 45p per mile, I am going to do a tax return for her to claim back the additional 15p (which on 9,000 miles is quite significant money). My question is does she get a full reimbursement of the 15p when her tax return has been filed or just the tax relief on the 15p?

A couple of other questions from this:

  1. Dos the additional mileage go within the employment section of the tax return as an unclaimed disbursement?
  2. Next year there is the possibility that she will do > 10,000 miles but the flat rate I believe remains 30p. Is it the same treatment that some mileage she can reclaim 15p on but some she will owe back 5p?

Has she been required to do a return?

If not then you do not need to do one just for a mileage claim. Search HMRC for P87 and claim on that.

 As for the other questions:

 - the refund is tax on the additional 15p/mile not the 15p

- when she exceeds 10,000 miles work out the allowable at HMRC rates on the total, deduct the amount reimbursed by the employer and claim the difference
