Recommendations for self assessment tax return software

In the past I've mostly focussed on corporate work, so I've never had too many self assessment tax returns to prepare.  These returns have all been pretty simple, so I've been able to get away by filing them via HMRC's website system.

However, I've recently got a couple of new clients with partnership and trust income, which HMRC's website can't handle.

Any recommendations for a cheap but reliable personal tax software solution for under 25 returns?  I'm currently with PTP for accounts and corporate tax, so may go with their solution unless anyone has any bad experiences of it.

taxcalc

taxcalc.

Currently using FTAX to save money as taxcalc upped prices too far couple of years ago.

Kicking oneself on a daily basis.

Will go back to taxcalc next year (but don't tell them that... lol).

Everytime I try to submit a return through ftax there's some problem; update Adobe, update ftax, communication error, data error, hmrc site is busy, blah blah blah. And when the thing get's rejected the "errors were found.. in.." codes are so complicated and usually end up coz the company number in the accounts didn't have a "0" at the start.....

Whinge moan..

Oh yes, and the capital allowance calcs, ............

Nah I'll leave it there.

before IRIS bought them. We found really good to use with very few problems. Not sure of the VFM for only 25 or so clients.

I've used BTC for some time and the software and support are great. I started with their SA but have now moved to the full Practice Management software which is excellent. I think they also do a lower cost express option for your sort of requirement.

Sorry to hear that, Whinger.

I'd like to find out more, if I could trouble you further - unpleasant is definitely not what we're aiming for!

Absolute Accounting

Hi

I used PTP until early 2010 by which time I got feed-up with their changing attitude to support and price increases. After looking around I switched to Absolute Accounting setup by Tim Good. I use it for A/c's, SA, P/ship & CT, all integrates thru their Client DB. Trust module is available.

It was new to the market in early 2010 based on Forbes system [the developers] but it has come on leaps and bounds with new facilities and improved user interface.

Support is excellent, quick responding and helpful.

Another accountant we work with closely switched away from PTP to Absolute earlier this year.

Well featured, good pricing

I have used Keytime for many years for CT and SA . On the few occasions I've needed support they could not have been more helpful. Because of their pre-submission tests I have never had a rejection from filing with HMRC.  Very highly recommended.

Drummohr

Drummohr is a fantastic tax programme,  very intuitive and well supported, (now owned by Iris).   But they don't do any small usage bundles, I don't think,  so maybe a bit expensive for what you need.  But give them a call, perhaps they could come up with something acceptable.  No connection, just a satisfied customer for about 10 years.

I like PTP

but think it's getting a bit pricy. Have been trialling Ftax as well but agree with Whinger. I wouldn't recommend it.

Software users vote every year to make TaxCalc No 1

cbales | | Permalink

Taxation software users have voted every year for the last 4 years to make TaxCalc Number 1 and from 6 years practical usage I know full well why - user friendly and effective software with an online filing system that has worked well for years.

Combine that with a second to none support service which gets you a real person on the other end of the phone within seconds and you will see why so many users are very happy to use Acorah Software products.

BTC Tax Software

Like you, I started off using the HMRC website to file returns, but soon realised I needed a better solution.

I looked at a number of different software solutions, and chose BTC.

I started off using their Corporation Tax Solutions software, and then as I acquired more SA and partnership clients, upgraded to the Practice Management software.

Last week I submitted abbreviated accounts directly to Companies House using the PM software - a fantastic time saving add-in.

Upgrading to PM has been one of the best decisions I've taken since I set up my business, I know that it'll be with me as the business grows and become an ever increasingly important tool.

The software is reasonably priced, and more importantly support from the team at BTC is very, very good.

Highly recommended!

do any allow non-agent returns, non Gvt G.way reg. returns?

Do any of these software allow you to submit returns for clients that you are not yet agent registered for (and the client is not GG registered)?
