Sage corruption and alternatives

Sage corruption and alternatives

Didn't find your answer?

Hi all. Is anybody else having issues with Sage data becoming corrupt? We have had about half a dozen instances this year of data becoming corrupt and having to be sent for repair. This has led to us being unable to work on the clients data for up to a week whilst Sage repair the data and, in all cases, having to re-enter data. Obviously this is affecting our profitability as we are having to do work twice. Is anybody else having these issues? Have you managed to resolve it or have people looked at alternative software?

Is Sage getting corrupt on your machine only?

Corruptions are bound to happen occasionally, If lots of them happen while the data is in your practice it may be time to look at your operating system.

May not be S*ge...

As much as a dislike S*ge its unusual for it to continually corrupt data, my personal guess would be you are doing something to the data that it doesnt like perhaps via your network setup, restore procedure or people just turning off their PCs/server and closing things down properly.

If you are looking for an alternate to S*ge then I would have a look at VT, but it isnt quite as feature rich as S*ge but then not everyone needs the all singing and all dancing stuff.

Sage coruption

What version are you using?  We were using Sage Line 50 Professional 2012 and repeatedly had corruptions.  We have an outsourced IT team and they went through a process of trial and error.  They changed the switch on the network, the cables, some of us had new PCs and the corruption was still occurring and Sage could not advise what was causing the coruption.  There are a couple of things you can do to try and narrow the problem. Firstly, you can set up the event log in Sage when you are logged in as manager.  Each user will also need to activate this on their PC, but you will be able to get a report that shows when the error occurred and which user.  You should also ensure that everyone logs out of Sage before going home. You will also need to ensure that all occurances are included and not only critical (this will make sense when you see the set up screen).  From here you can start to narrow down the errors and look for trends.  After much hardware replacement and corruptions we found that the issue lay with the invoicing module.  As long as we only updated 1 invoice at a time no errors occurred, that said I understand this may have been fixed in the 2014 version.  Other things to be aware of are that Sage sometimes has issues with Rapport,  (you have this downloaded on your PC for banking) and a couple of other software programmes, so probably best to speak to Sage about that. It is pot luck who picks up the call though - good luck!

There have been times when Sage itself caused corruption (one instance springs to mind, which was tied to a new release and fixed pretty quickly) and there are no doubt more obscure sets of circumstances where Sage itself can cause corruption.

But comfortably the most common cause of problems are computer or network related, and consequently adgj121's advice is quite correct, as someone has to work systematically through the network and computers.

There are some additional steps that you can take.  First backup more frequently, it sounds as if the client needs to do so at least twice a day.  Secondly it might be worth moving to a terminal server setup, as this eliminates most network issues and many computer issues.

Moving to alternatives

Hi Adam,

If you are looking at alternatives, and those alternatives are Xero or QuickBooks Online, then we can convert (and often fix in the process) Sage data to those.
