Sage Instant backup can't be verified, opens with wrong version

Sage Instant backup can't be verified, opens...

Didn't find your answer?

I work in IT support so not totally familiar with all the complexities of Sage, but this issue does not really involve accounting procedures.

The customer has Sage Instant v15 installed on a Windows 7 PC with their old business accounts information (business now closed). The new business has now opened and they have installed Sage Instant v17 onto the same PC. When the v17 application is closed and the option taken to make a backup this is done and stored o.k. However when the backup file is "double clicked" the v15 Instant application is opened and presumably is just using and displaying the held/stored information for this version and not the backup. If I try opening the backup using "Open with" and browse to the Instant v17 application, it still opens with v15.If I go to the v15 application and rename Sage to Sage_old the application disappears from the suggested "open with" area and if I then browse to the v17 application the backup will not open at all. If necessary the customer may accept the deletion of the old v15 application after backing up and saving the customer data but obviously doesn't want to lose the ability to open the new v17 application. It would appear that the backups may well be correct but the designated application to open them is wrong, this has not been proved, but the accountant who takes some regular backups has not complained that they are for the wrong business. Any thoughts?

Sage backup file
To open a backup file first open Sage Instant then go to the File menu, Restore and select the backup you want to open (restore). Be careful as the restore process will over write any data already in Sage. As far as I'm aware backup files cannot be opened by "double clicking".

File Associations

Sage backups cannot be restored by double clicking on them anyway, they can only be restored using the Restore option in the program.

To add to that, the .001 file extension used by Sage for backups is not automatically associated with the Sage program so, in this case, someone has manually set the file association for the .001 files albeit, as per the above, this would still not be a mechanism for restoring.
